Assessment is vital to identifying student mastery of skills and standards. As students practice and learn certain skills, it is important to determine their level of understanding. Formative assessments provide teachers with the necessary feedback to ascertain understanding and decide if additional practice and/or instruction is necessary prior to the introduction of more difficult skills. As skills are learned, they build to the mastery of age-appropriate standards. “Faculty use a variety of curriculum-based assessments aligned with learning outcomes and instructional practices to assess student learning, including formative, summative, authentic performance, and student self-assessment” (Catholic School Standards 8.3).
